In memory of Elena Shmatova
We are saddened to announce that Elena Alexandrovna Shmatova, General Director of the Sojuzpushnina Auction Company from 2019 to 2023, recently passed away. She was a person who, during a difficult period for the industry, headed one of the country’s oldest fur enterprises and preserved its traditions, while also paving the way for the company’s development.
Elena Alexandrovna took up the position of CEO in 2019, when Sojuzpushnina – the brand with nearly a century‑long history dating back to 1931 – needed stable leadership and a fresh perspective on the international fur market.
Over the years of her tenure, the company managed to maintain its position as one of the world’s largest auctions for the sale of wild and farmed sable, and to preserve the trust of suppliers and buyers from dozens of countries – from China to European countries.
Her approach to work is best described by her own words:
«Our openness and commitment to addressing the diverse interests of people involved in the fur business has enabled us to overcome many difficult moments together and strengthen the base for further development.»
The team of Sojuzpushnina, seeing her off from her position as CEO in November 2023, noted that in a short time she had earned respect in the fur business and helped the company: «Preserve its traditions, reach new milestones, and build a work model with the potential for further growth. »
Elena Alexandrovna not only led the company but also actively participated in the life of the entire industry. In 2022, she was elected to the Board of the Russian Fur Union – an organization that brings together key players in the domestic fur market.
This indicates that her authority was recognized not only by her colleagues within Sojuzpushnina but also by the professional community as a well.
Everyone who knew Elena Alexandrovna will cherish the bright memory of her: her colleagues, partners, suppliers, and buyers at fur auctions, as well as members of the Russian fur community.
We express our deepest condolences to Elena Alexandrovna’s family, friends, and all those who was close to her. The loss is irreparable, but the cause she devoted herself to and the warmth she left in people’s hearts continue to live on.
